Somatic Healing

What is a Somatic Approach?

A somatic approach considers your body's innate wisdom as part of therapy. Relying exclusively on talking and analysis does not always address the deep-rooted beliefs and emotions held in your soma.

My goal is to help you inhabit your body more fully and safely. By doing so, you can feel into change. Mind-body integration allows for newer positive experiences of self, where sensation, movement, emotions, and relationships can start to feel welcomed. It can help you achieve a deeper sense of well-being.

What somatic Approaches Are Used in therapy?

I’ve completed specializations in several somatic approaches.

Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP) focuses on the sensory experiences of the body to access and process traumatic memories and emotions. It uses techniques such as mindfulness, breathing, and movement to help individuals regulate their physical and emotional responses and increase their awareness of their bodies.

Parts work (i.e., character/adaptive strategies, Internal Family Systems) entails the exploration of different aspects within oneself that may be holding contrasting beliefs, emotions, or sensations. By acknowledging and validating the unique voice and perspective of each part, you can initiate the healing of emotional wounds and integrate conflicting beliefs or emotions. This transformative process leads to a greater sense of wholeness, self-compassion, and confidence in your ability to create the desired changes.

Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) is a creative process that utilizes imagery, symbolism, and gesture to facilitate the emergence of emotions or unconscious experiences and promote new meaning-making. At its core, DMT philosophy is grounded in the mind-body connection, recognizing physical movement's impact on our physiology and psychology. By expanding our range of motion and attending to the quality of our movement, we can tap into a deeper awareness of our bodies and emotions and achieve greater well-being.

What happens during a ‘typical’ session?

Each session is customized to your needs. Some prefer verbal expression, while others seek a somatic or creative approach to integrate their experiences. For those struggling with overwhelming sensations, grounding tools and mindfulness are introduced for nervous-system regulation. Each session delves into themes, utilizing diverse tools to enhance the mind-body connection and foster internal safety. We explore what resonates most with you in a collaborative manner.

Interested in Somatics…but What is dance/Movement therapy?

If you've ever felt intimidated by ‘dance’, you're not alone. The Westernized perception of dance often creates a one-sided idea of what bodies are worthy of dancing, what qualifies as dance, and who can dance.

Your inhale and exhale are in dance right now.

Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) is a powerful way to heal and explore yourself using movement. It helps you tap into your inner feelings and rhythms, helping explore emotions and body sensations in a trauma-infomed way. This increases how well you know yourself and lets you express yourself without just using words alone. Remember, DMT is just one of the ways I help with the body and mind integration. Together, we'll find the best way to help you based on what you need..
